Southern Italy, 552 CE

That night, screams tore me from an innocent slumber. If it had not been for the mysterious stranger, I too would be dead.

Sucked dry of my life force, like my parents and sister.

I held my knees against my chest as the rickety wagon bounced along a bumpy dirt road. The kind stranger was in control of the horse pulling the wagon, and he took me further and further away from the only home I knew.

I did not know where we were going. But anywhere was better than here.

The heroic stranger was just as much of a mystery as the monster that killed my family. I did not know his name, where he lived, or who he was. I did not know how he had known what was happening or how he had gotten there so quickly, but I was grateful to him for it.

What I knew for sure was that I was no longer the same. No, mentally, I was not the same after experiencing such trauma, but I came out of it physically different, too. I did not know how I knew that, but I did.

I was changing somehow.

My bones growled, and my muscles screamed with even the slightest movement. Colors looked so much more vivid than they did before. They were almost too bright for me to keep my eyes open. My ears detected every murmur, every tremor, and every squeak that came from the wagon’s wheels. What I expected to be the softest sounds were suddenly so loud, so loud, so loud…

The stranger told me he was too late to stop this. That now I was becoming like him, whatever that meant. I asked him what he meant by that, what I was becoming, but he brushed it off and told me he would explain everything. He would explain everything once we were there.

Wherever that was.

Still in shock, I just nodded my head and accepted when he offered me a place to stay. After what happened, I had nowhere else to go.

Besides, I did not know anyone else who could give me answers or tell me what was happening to me.

Screams had woken me. Then a crash. I barely had time to process what was happening. My mother and sister’s ragged cries still rang in my ears. I still saw my family’s cold, lifeless bodies on the floor. I hid once I realized they were dead, but he, it—whatever that monster was—still found me.

I still felt the monster’s tight grip and his sharp teeth embedded in my neck. I still felt the dizziness overcoming me. I still felt the tingling numbness in the tips of my fingers, and I still felt the trace of my quick, shallow breaths lingering in my lungs…

It all happened so quickly.

I must have fainted. One moment, I felt myself slipping away, and the next, the stranger was carrying me, telling me that my family had been avenged and I was all right now, that everything would be all right.

How could he say that?

Everything was most definitely not all right.
